Might be a cool Xmas present...

By Daniel Goleman

Why It's a Must-Read

" Despite the popular mystique of grades and scores of scholastic aptitude and IQ tests, it's an "open secret" that those grades and scores cannot unerringly predict who will succeed as a leader. At best, says author Daniel Goleman, IQ contributes perhaps 20% to the factors which determine leadership success -- leaving 80% to other forces like "emotional intelligence."
According to Goleman, emotional intelligence is an essential condition of great leadership, and is comprised of five components
: "

1. Self Awareness - The ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, and their effect on others.
2. Self Regulation - The ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods, the propensity to suspend judgment - to think before acting.
3. Motivation - A passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status, a propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistence.
4. Empathy - The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people, skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions.
5. Social Skill - Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks, an ability to find common ground and build rapport.
