Daniel Luca Vettori (born 27 January 1979) is a cricketer who is the current captain of the New Zealand cricket team. He is the eighth player in Test history to take 300 wickets and score 3,000 runs. He is the youngest player to have represented New Zealand in Test cricket, having made his debut in 1996–97 at the age of 18. Vettori is a bowling all-rounder who bowls slow left-arm orthodox spin, he is known for his accuracy, flight and guile rather than prodigious turn. He has a Test batting average of around 30 making him one of the more consistent and better batsmen in the New Zealand cricket team.

He was born in Auckland and brought up in Hamilton, attending Marian School and later St. Paul's Collegiate School. When available, he plays provincial cricket for Northern Districts and is also an international member of Indian Premier League team the Delhi DareDevils. Vettori also represents the Queensland Bulls in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. He is among a very small minority international sports stars to wear prescription spectacles while playing sport and is the first cricketer of Italian descent to represent New Zealand.

Bowling Records-

He took his 300th Test wicket in Sri Lanka in 2009, becoming only the second New Zealand bowler (after Richard Hadlee) to pass that mark and he is currently New Zealand's leading ODI wicket-taker.

Vettori has three 10 wicket hauls in Test cricket, against Sri Lanka, Australia and Bangladesh. His best innings figures were achieved at Auckland in 1999–2000 against Australia where he took 7/87. He finished with career best match figures in that game, taking 12/149. They are the second best ever by a New Zealander, with only Richard Hadlee having taken more in a match. With another 12 wicket effort, against Bangladesh in Chittagong, he became the only New Zealander to have taken a dozen wickets in a Test on two occasions.

He is the bowler to have most frequently dismissed Shane Warne in Tests, getting him out nine times, most notably for 99 in a Test at Perth. Ironically, in the 1st Test against Pakistan in 2009–10 season, Vettori was himself dismissed for 99, while chasing a world record in centuries batting from position number 8.

Captaincy-

Prior to becoming captain on a permanent basis in 2007, Vettori had captained the Black Caps in ODI cricket on occasions such as when regular captain Stephen Fleming was not available. As of the end of 2006, he had led New Zealand in 11 games, winning eight of them.

He captained New Zealand at the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa. Subsequently, it was announced that Vettori would captain the Black Caps in all forms of the game: Twenty20s, ODIs and Tests. Initially, he was announced to only be captain of the former two.

Vettori's captaincy has had a rocky start, losing a Test series in England first up. Vettori also attracted some criticism in the following ODI series when he engaged in angry shouting from the balcony at The Oval, regarding a controversial run out that had occurred. He then refused to shake hands with the England team after the match. This contrasted with Fleming's more languid, laid back style.

Batting-

Vettori has matured into a useful lower-order batsman, having scored 3,000 Test runs, including five centuries (134 against Pakistan 2009, 140 against Sri Lanka 2009,137* against Pakistan in 2003 ,127 against Zimbabwe in 2005 and 118 against India in 2009) as well as several half-centuries. Although it took Vettori 47 Tests to score his first 1,000 runs at an average of 17.24, the second thousand took him just 22 Tests at a rate of 42.52 per innings.

In December 2006, Vettori began establishing himself as more of an all-rounder, batting at number 5 for New Zealand in the one-day series against Sri Lanka.

On 4 December 2009, despite the Black Caps only scoring 99 runs against Pakistan, Vettori became the highest Test run scorer batting at no.8 spot, a record previously held by Shane Warne. For the third Test against Pakistan that started on 11 December 2009, Vettori promoted himself to no.6 in the batting order, it is presumed he will bat at this position in future Test matches.

Personal life-

Vettori is married to Mary O'Carroll, to which he has two children. He moved from Hamilton to Auckland to live with her but has continued playing for the Northern Districts Knights. They have a son named James (born 8 March 2009).

Leading Black Caps eye another hefty IPL pay day-

Leading Black Caps Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor look set for another massive payday from the IPL after being named among the 21 players with the highest reserve price of $US400,000 (NZ$538,864) for next year’s auction.

The auction will be held in Bangalore on January 8 and 9.

They are among the biggest names in the game although there are some notable absentees - Australians Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson won’t be involved and once again the troubled Pakistan camp has been ignored.

The resurgent Johnson, who last week bowled Australia to victory in Perth, has elected to sit out the fourth edition of the IPL, which will start in April days after the World Cup, in a bid to prolong his international career.

''We want to manage his career so he can continue to play on at the elite level for six, seven, eight more years,'' Johnson's manager, Sam Halvorsen, said.

''We don't want him to be burnt out by overcooking himself. We don't see how that will be aided by playing too much cricket and playing IPL is too much cricket. It's also a long time from home, and they get precious little time at home.

''When he's not playing cricket he's working extremely hard in the gym to ensure his core strength is right where it needs to be to enable him to bowl the way he bowls.''

Johnson is said to be wary of missing out on international cricket as a result of getting injured in the event.

West Indies legend Brian Lara, whio hasn't played meaningful cricket for four years is among the group of new names along with current England stars Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad and James Anderson.

The franchises have $US9m to spend on their personnel.

There are 10 teams involved with 74 matches and the season looks set to go ahead despite the threat of court action.

The Indian organisers released a list of 416 players for the auction.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori on Monday reaffirmed that he would step down from the post after the 2011 cricket World Cup. Vettori, who has opted out of the ongoing T20 Internationals against Pakistan for resting his back, said he would stand by his decision irrespective of the team's

performance in the tournament co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

"I still stand by those words of finishing up after the World Cup," Vettori was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Herald.

"I understand things can change and there may be a chance for that, but at this point I will finish after the cup."

New Zealand have been struggling for form and most recently had disastrous tours of India and Bangladesh. The slump in form also led to John Wright taking over as the coach from Mark Greatbatch last Monday.

Vettori and team mate Ross Taylor were all praise for the new coach.

"His real skills are getting around players and making them feel confident," Vettori said.

"After that many losses (11 straight ODI defeats) guys tend to question their game, but he is a positive guy and that will rub off on the players."

Taylor talked about Wright's ethos.

"That is the first thing he has instilled in us," Taylor said.

"Every time he talks, it is that if we play as a collective we give ourselves the best chance. He is trying to get everyone to trust himself."

Daniel Vettori has been on the international scene so long it is sometimes hard to believe he has only recently crossed into his thirties.

New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori has claimed 4-36 in his 100th Test to help skittle Australia for 231 on day one of the second Test in Hamilton.

Skipper Ricky Ponting chose to bat first at Seddon Park and Australia's batsmen struggled to cope with the slow-paced pitch and the disciplined bowling of Vettori and paceman Tim Southee (4-61).

Opener Simon Katich top-scored with 88 in his 50th Test.

Poor decision-making cost Australia dearly, as Ponting (22) fell to an ambitious attempted single and vice-captain Michael Clarke played an ugly slog to long-on.

Southee struck again after lunch when Mike Hussey, in his 50th Test, was caught behind for 22.

Aiming for centuries in three successive Tests, Clarke scored 28 in 33 balls, holing out to the bowling of spinner Jeetan Patel.

Vettori claimed the key wicket of Katich caught at short leg in the penultimate over before tea at 5-180.

Katich was dejected as he left the field, dismissed between 80 and 99 for the fifth time this summer in 12 innings. The left-hander struck 11 fours in his four-hour stay.

Australia lost 3-1 in eight deliveries after tea when Southee removed Brad Haddin (12) and Marcus North (9) and Mitchell Johnson (0) fell victim to Vettori.

Australia's 74.3-over innings was their lowest total in New Zealand since their 214 in Auckland in March 2000.

Earlier, Ponting won the toss for the eighth successive time, including the five ODI matches and two Tests on the New Zealand tour.

John Wright says he's keen to forge a good relationship with the Black Caps skipper

New Black Caps coach John Wright hopes captain Daniel Vettori buys into the new management structure.

The former Indian coach will head a overhauled Black Caps management, with Vettori no longer a selector and Mark Greatbatch out of the coaching set-up altogether.

Wright told Radio Sport Vettori is a still a key part of the Black Caps. "I've got every confidence in Dan" he said. "He's our best international cricketer, he's proud of playing for his country. We have to forge that relationship and understand we're both in the same boat."

John Wright has already started his role, sitting in on selection meetings for the Black Caps Twenty20 and test squads.
